The unique island of Naxos sits in the midst of the Agaen Sea. A well kept secret amongst travelers of the world, Naxos holds many impressive mountain villages that offer old-world Cycladic charm in an unparalleled setting. The landscape surrounding these villages features fertile, lush land, ripe for agriculture. Three mountain villages of note are Apeiranthos Village, Filoti Village and Koronos Village. The locals in all three of these villages are welcoming to tourists.
Located at the foot of Mt. Fanari, Apeiranthos Village is perhaps the most beautiful village on the island. Apeiranthos Village offers breathtaking views and traditional Venetian architecture. There are four museums located in this large village: the Museum of Folk Art, the Geological Museum, the Archaeological Museum of Apeiranthos and the Museum of Natural History. Other attractions include breathtaking churches, Venetian castles and historic buildings.
Filoti Village is the largest and quite possibly the best-known village on the island. Positioned on the slope of Mount Zeus, the tallest mountain on the island, Filoti Village is a densely populated traditional settlement surrounded by olive groves. There are many cafes and taverns in town, many of which are shaded by a giant plane-tree, situated in the center of town. Sites to see in Filosi include the Tower of Barotsi, the Cave of Za and the Tower of Chimarros.
Koronos Village is a stepped village with no drivable roads, situated on two slopes on the eastern foothills of Mount Koronos. The lush, rolling mountains around the town are full of vineyards. Koronos village is famous for it's now-defunct emery mines and the town features an Emery Museum. Visitors will also enjoy the old square in the center of the building, the Spring of Plata and the nearby Church of Panagia Argokiliotissa. Further up the mountain is the "Kako Spilio", which stands for "evil cave" in Greek. Artifacts have been found here that indicate this cave was the ancient worship place of Dionysus. |
